Thanksgiving in Cozumel

This was my first time to Mexico other than just over the border and the first thing I saw when we walked into our hotel room was an insect about an inch and half long scuttle across the tile floor. At least I thought it was an insect, turns out it was a tiny gecko. Our own personal room mascot! Here it is on the floor and once again in my hand so you can see actual size. He escaped from my clutches and hid under the bed and stayed there until our last night when he entertained me by climbing the walls.

The weather was kind of crappy the first day on Cozumel so we decided to take a ferry to the mainland and go to Tulum, a Mayan ruin. It was strange how just crossing the channel that day could make such a difference in the weather. It was a little warm on the other side and we stopped on the tour and took a dip in the sea right there at the ruins! Afterwards we went to a snorkeling amusement park called Xel Ha (pronounced Shell Ha). I used up all the pictures on my underwater camera here. Looking back I wish I had waited and saved some pictures for our snorkeling tour of some of Cozumel’s coral reefs. The coral was beautiful but I think we had a greater variety of fish right outside our hotel the Cozumeleno.

It was hard to believe that we were only 5 hours away from 35 degree temperatures in Denver! The temperature here was a constant 75 degrees and the water seemed even warmer. Here’s a shot of a puffer fish that was right by the hotel pier. Chris saw a flounder or halibut or some other flat fish in that family whose eyes migrate to just one side of its head. I missed it the first time, but luckily Chris saw it again on our last day, when he almost put his hand on a rock and the rock moved. So I got to see it too!

It wasn’t any fun to leave Cozumel. The worst part was the flight back. We were crammed into the last row right behind a baby that needed changing. The good news is that halfway into the flight we couldn’t smell the baby’s diaper anymore. We were now smelling what the boy across from us had for lunch and had now lost all over the toilet. Chris was brilliant and went to the other restroom and got us each a little bit of towel paper with soap on it so we could wave it under our noses whenever we caught a whiff of anything pungent. Good times, good times.
