Palapa 2.0

We’ve had this old Big Lots gazebo for years and years. When we first put the pool under, Roger had a great idea when he suggested we tiki-fy it with some thatch.

The roof was on it’s last legs, so we decided to finally bite the bullet and make a thatch roof for it as well. The original roof had a top hat and pretty wide spacing between the spans, so it didn’t look too hot.

Our friend Michael Dees has a welder and he offered to help reconfigure the roof to be a continuous line from top to bottom. It turned out to be a much bigger job than we intended, so we only had time to weld the middle-top of the roof together and flatten it.

Then I set the top onto the middle and used hose clamps to keep the two together. Michael suggested that we weld horizontal supports for the thatch, but he left… so I grabbed some scrap bamboo and made supports with them instead.

Now it looks pretty good.! Someday we’ll paint the supports to look like bamboo.
