I’ve been using portable heaters and swamp coolers to heat and cool my shop and office for years because I was too cheap to get a mini-split installed and too scared to install one myself.
The swamp coolers could barely keep up in the last few years, so I finally bit the bullet and figured I better get it now before the tariffs start up.
Turns out it was relatively straightforward to install and very similar to filling transformers (that were 100x bigger than the mini-split) or SF6 circuit breakers. I only hope that I didn’t kink the hoses too badly.
I had to learn to make flare connections that haven’t leaked so far…so I should be in good shape if we decide to propane the Airstream.
I thought I was done, but then remembered that I have to fill all the holes. I’ll cut away the extra foam tomorrow and putty up the holes to finish it off.
I found out that I could have saved $200 by buying the the same mini-split on Ebay when I realized they rebranded.
It took over a week for the customer support department to finally tell me which unit was 9000 btu and which unit was 12,000 btu. Luckily, it turns out I installed the correct unit in the correct room by accident!
