My Aunt told us about the Gopher Hole Museum in Torrington, Alberta and we had to go, It was my mom’s birthday so we took a day trip to see the sights. We can’t say enough good things about this place and encourage anyone travelling through Alberta to see it in person because the pictures do not do it justice.
The museum was created when the City of Torrington received a $9,000.00 tourism grant and had a spirited debate about what to do with the money. They didn’t want another Pioneer type museum but couldn’t agree on an alternative. Someone suggested this idea because they have a lot of gophers and the idea passed because they were tired, frustrated, and out of ideas. They received worldwide attention when PETA protested the idea and many of the letters and emails they recieved are collected in a binder alongside the articles from the international media. People were sending in donations just to spite PETA. Awesome!!
